This course explores key philosophical concepts and debates that shaped 20th-century art. Focusing on movements like Modernism, Postmodernism, and Surrealism, students will examine the relationship between aesthetics, politics, and society. Through critical analysis of influential artists and thinkers, the course encourages students to engage with ideas such as the role of the artist, the nature of beauty, and the intersection of art with cultural and social change.

This course is ideal for students who have previously completed ARTH 257: Topics in History of Art – Modern and Contemporary Era or those with a strong background in art history. Students without this prerequisite are encouraged to consult with the instructor before registering to ensure they meet the course requirements.
